MARTHA STREET

FREMANTLE

This beautiful little house is a great example of what can be done when good design meets a small lot area. The 235m/sq lot in heart of Fremantle offered a great opportunity in terms of location and the finished, framed wall, construction sits perfectly. With its light, beachy feel it is well located in the coast-side town.

Despite the diminutive footprint of the building, it exudes the feel of a larger property and not of the one-bed residence it really is. This has been achieved with additional volume achieved through the deliverer of a loft style roof form, giving volume not only to the external appearance but also to the internal amenity. The entry, living and dining are all under a cathedral ceiling that connects to a small loft studio over the ground floor bedroom. This delivers a generous sense of space even though the footprint of this space is only 51 m/sq. The layout also exploits the greatest asset of this lot, that being its northern facing orientation. The living, dining and kitchen share northern facing glazing on to a private courtyard area which adds to the feel of exclusive seclusion this residence provides. Remaining amenity is compact but more than adequate for the accommodation, including individual walk-in robe, bathroom and laundry plus a full-scale kitchen. Another great feature of the building is the studio loft, creating a divide in which separate activities can take place, whilst maintaining a connection to the living area below, made possible by the cathedral ceiling and adding greatly to the perception of generous space and volume. Directly off the living space is access to the full-sized garage which, with its generous proportions and north facing windows, provides the opportunity to be utilised as a studio space.

This dwelling is a great example of how a small building can be well designed to create comfortable living, fulfilling the accommodation requirements of single person or a couple, and be delivered in a typical independent residential setting, making practical use of Fremantle’s vibrant inner city opportunities.
